  • Child marriages on the rise

    The child marriages issue is still arising in Rusape,  Makoni district.  

    Early child marriages have reached peak as school children from grade 7 to form 3 are mostly getting married.  
    This year only 10 , 16 years and below children are pregnant from Tsindi Secondary School and other children from the surrounding communities who doesn't go to school . 

    Speaking with the people from the surrounding societies,  Mrs Prisca Munedzimwe suggested that awareness campaigns should be held in the schools because children doesn't know what is good and bad. 

    One of the victims, she's is 15 years and 8 months pregnant,  she says that having a boyfriend has an advantage of being given money to buy drinks and other trivial things.  

    Half of the girls are being impregnated by the boys of their age but some of them are impregnated by the old man because of religious beliefs and family poverty.

    The health worker of the village ( mbuya utano ) Cecilia Mutombwa says that man from churches are manipulating school children because of dreams and they end up being pregnant because the man says that I saw you in my dreams and we were happily married with our children.  

    She went on to say that local clinics has reported that children below 16 years are coming to the clinics demanding to be injected and given family planning pills .

    The number of child marriages is  increasing than last year and they say maybe it's because of the Christmas holiday were children were drinking recklessly and some didn't come back home.  The people of Makoni are looking for help to stop child  marriages.
