Government Retracts Call for Independence Levies on Learners
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has condemned an unauthorized independence day levy on pupils. Yesterday, Gweru District issued a letter stating that all Midlands schools must pay $1 per child for independence celebrations.
However, the Ministry released a press statement today, March 26, 2025, clarifying that no financial contributions are required from schools, learners, parents, or community members.
The Ministry secured the national budget for all independence day commemorations.
The Ministry views the Gweru District Schools inspector's request as unauthorized and unwarranted.
An immediate inquiry has been initiated, and the official responsible will be required to explain their actions ,disciplinary measures will be taken.
School heads, teachers, and stakeholders have been instructed to disregard the directive and ensure no payments are made.
The Ministry prioritizes transparency and urges citizens to participate freely in independence celebrations without financial obligations.
