Zimbabwe Grapples with Obstetric Fistula: A Hidden Health Crisis

In a bid to raise awareness and support for women affected by obstetric fistula, Amnesty International  hosted a commemoration of the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula at the 602 Hall last Friday , Rusape.

The event featured dramatic performances by Eastern Arts from Mutare, highlighting the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for obstetric fistula.

This condition, often resulting from prolonged or obstructed labor, leaves women with chronic health issues, social isolation, and economic hardship.

According to the World Health Organization, Zimbabwe has one of the highest maternal mortality rates globally, with 362 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Obstetric fistula is a contributing factor, with hundreds of new cases reported annually.

A guest from the Ministry of Health and Child Care revealed that many cases involve teenage girls subjected to early child marriages.

The government has implemented initiatives to address this issue, including free surgery and transportation for affected women.

A toll-free hotline, 08080231, has been established for those seeking help.

Personal stories like Memory's illustrate the devastating impact of obstetric fistula.

After experiencing obstructed labor, Memory developed a vesicovaginal fistula, leading to constant leakage and social isolation.

Despite challenges, organizations like Amnesty International, UNFPA, and Doctors Without Borders are working tirelessly to address obstetric fistula through awareness campaigns, surgical repair services, and training for healthcare workers.
