US Immigration warns foreign influencers: World Cup content creation needs work visa or face deportation

U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security have warned that foreign influencers traveling to the United States for the World Cup risk deportation if they create content without the appropriate visa.

In a joint statement sent to EL PAÍS, the agencies said entering the U.S. “with the sole purpose of creating content (as an influencer), thereby generating earnings from the United States while in the country, is considered work and requires the appropriate visa.”

The statement clarifies that a tourist visa, B-2, permits entry for leisure, vacations, family visits, or medical treatment, but prohibits work activities or receiving income derived from work performed on U.S. soil.

CBP officers at ports of entry will determine case-by-case whether an individual’s content creation constitutes work. Influencers found filming and posting content to earn money while in the U.S. on a B-2 visa may be denied entry or deported.

The warning comes ahead of the World Cup, which is expected to draw large numbers of international content creators to U.S. host cities.

U.S. authorities advised that a media or journalist visa is required for those whose primary purpose is monetized content production.
