UK Court Sentences 61-Year-Old UK-Based Nigerian to 28 Years for Child Sexual Abuse Offences

London, United Kingdom – April 16, 2026 — A UK court has sentenced 61-year-old UK-based Nigerian, Anthony Adewale Sobogun, to 28 years in prison after he was found guilty of multiple child sexual abuse offences committed over more than a decade.

Sobogun, a Croydon resident living on Thistlewood Crescent, was convicted at Inner London Crown Court on 17 counts of serious sexual offences against two children, with the abuse dating back to the 1990s through the early 2000s. The charges included repeated sexual assaults on a girl under the age of 13, offences described in court as prolonged and deeply traumatic for the victims.

The Metropolitan Police began investigating after the victims, who were known to Sobogun, came forward with disclosures about the abuse. Despite the age of the crimes, detectives were able to build a strong case using victim testimonies and supporting records. Sobogun was arrested in the early hours of 2 July 2025 following the inquiry.

During the investigation, it emerged that one of the victims had become pregnant as a result of the abuse, and Sobogun had accompanied her to an abortion clinic. Medical and counselling records later supported this account and helped investigators establish the extent of the offences.

The officer who led the investigation commended the bravery of the victims in coming forward, noting that their courage was central to securing justice. In a joint statement, the victims spoke about the emotional toll of the abuse and encouraged other survivors to report similar experiences, stressing that silence and fear often prevent justice.

Authorities also highlighted the use of victim-centred investigative methods during the case, including recorded interviews conducted in specially designed facilities to support survivors while giving evidence.

The court said the 28-year sentence reflects the seriousness and long-term nature of the crimes and reinforces that non-recent child sexual abuse offences will still be pursued with full weight of the law.
