Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the world-renowned South African isicathamiya group, is mourning the loss of Albert Mazibuko, a 77-year-old member who passed away. He was a respected elder, cultural custodian, and one of the group's longest-serving members, joining in 1969.
Mazibuko dedicated over 50 years to music, becoming an integral part of the group's signature sound. He was known as "the librarian" due to his role as a keeper of the group's history and a source of wisdom.
Mazibuko played a crucial role in preserving and promoting isicathamiya music, working closely with founder Joseph Shabalala.
"He was truly an intelligent man, whose knowledge, humility, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of working alongside him," the group said.
Mazibuko's contributions to Ladysmith Black Mambazo and South African music are immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
The group has requested privacy for the Mazibuko family during this difficult time.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and all who were touched by his life and legacy.
May his soul rest in eternal peace. His legacy will continue to live on through the music."
