Hospital Cleaner Arrested for Trafficking Human Placentas in South Africa

A 39-year-old hospital cleaner, Rose Mnisi, was arrested in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga province, South Africa, for allegedly trafficking human placentas. Mnisi, who works in the maternity ward of a local hospital, was found with an undisclosed number of human placentas in a plastic bag while hitchhiking towards Nelspruit.

Authorities intercepted her based on a tip-off and seized the body tissues for forensic analysis.

Mnisi made her first court appearance and faces charges of illegal possession of human tissues.

Police are investigating whether she acted alone or as part of a larger network and haven't ruled out additional charges.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the origin and potential intended use of the placentas.

Some speculate that the placentas might be linked to underground practices, including traditional witchcraft, where placentas are believed to hold spiritual energy for casting curses, invoking spirits or gaining supernatural powers.

However, law enforcement hasn't confirmed the intended use.

The arrest has sparked fear and outrage in the community, with many expressing concerns about a growing black market for human body parts.

Civil society groups and health advocates are calling for stronger measures to safeguard medical facilities and prevent the misuse of biological materials .

Mnisi was released on R10,000 bail, with her case expected to continue next month.
The outcome of this case may lead to further investigations into hospital security protocols and the illegal trade of human tissues in South Africa .
