Selous man jailed 2 years for torching hut over US$2 dispute
A 36-year-old Selous man has been sentenced to two years in prison for setting fire to a neighbour’s hut following a US$2 argument.
Ali Munyambwana clashed with the victim at a shop inside the Selous Tobacco Farm compound on April 3, 2026. After leaving the shop, he went to the victim’s home and set the thatched hut alight while a neighbour watched.
The blaze destroyed the structure and property inside, including a work suit, safety shoes, and 5kg of beans. Police arrested Munyambwana after the incident was reported.
The court initially handed him a three-year sentence. Six months were suspended on condition he pays restitution, and another six months were suspended on condition of good behavior, leaving an effective two-year custodial term.
