Gutu Man Jailed for Stabbing Youth Over “Sabhuku” Remark
GUTU: A 61-year-old man from Gutu, Masvingo, has been jailed for assault after stabbing a 23-year-old man who called him “Sabhuku” during an argument at a local business centre.
Hebert Magombedze appeared before Magistrate Innocent Bepura and was convicted of assaulting Samson Mberikunashe on 24 August 2025.
He was sentenced to 36 months in prison, with 16 months suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The court heard that the dispute started in the evening when Mberikunashe addressed Magombedze as “Sabhuku”, a term used for a village head.
The comment angered Magombedze and led to a heated exchange.
Magombedze then struck Mberikunashe in the eye. When Mberikunashe tried to leave, Magombedze followed him.
He confronted him again on his way home and stabbed him once in the left rib, causing a deep chest wound.
Despite his injuries, Mberikunashe reported the attack to the police three days later.
A medical report confirmed the extent of his injuries, and Magombedze was arrested.
Prosecutor Nixon Chamisa told the court the attack was serious and had caused significant harm to the complainant.
Magistrate Bepura sentenced Magombedze to 36 months in prison and suspended 16 months for five years, leaving him to serve an effective 20 months.
