Veteran Broadcaster Tich Mata Appears in Court Over 2024 Fatal Accident
Tichafa Augustine Matambanadzo, popularly known as Tich Mata, appeared before the Harare Magistrates Court facing a charge of culpable homicide linked to a fatal road accident that occurred in 2024.
According to the State, Matambanadzo was driving along Samora Machel Avenue when he allegedly struck a pedestrian, 44-year-old Daniel Uchena, who was attempting to cross the road. Prosecutors told the court that Uchena was walking south across the busy thoroughfare at the time of the incident.
The court heard that the impact of the collision was severe, and the pedestrian died instantly at the scene. Investigations reportedly indicated that the driver may have failed to exercise due caution or maintain a safe speed under the prevailing road conditions.
During proceedings, the State revisited details of the 2024 accident as part of its effort to establish the basis for the culpable homicide charge. Matambanadzo, a well-known figure in Zimbabwe’s media industry, remained composed as the allegations were read before the court.
The matter is expected to return to court as investigations and legal processes continue.
