Rusape Man Jailed for Indecent Assault of Minor
A 29-year-old man from Rusape has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for the indecent assault of a 4-year-old girl, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe confirmed.
The Rusape Regional Magistrates Court heard that on 7 March 2026, at around 5:30 p.m., the victim was walking toward her grandmother’s homestead near Chiduku Road when the offender grabbed her hand and led her to a field near the Rusape River.
Once there, he lifted the child, laid her on the ground, removed his trousers and undergarments, and got on top of her.
Villagers harvesting maize nearby heard the girl’s screams and ran to the scene.
They found the man lying on top of the child with his trousers down. When confronted, he pulled up his trousers and fled.
Witnesses tried to chase him but he escaped.
They took the child to her mother, who reported the matter to police.
The report led to the man’s arrest.
The court convicted and sentenced him to 24 months in prison.
Six months were suspended for five years on condition of good behavior, leaving an effective sentence of 18 months.
Indecent assault of a minor is a serious offence under Zimbabwe’s Criminal Law Code.
Child protection groups have repeatedly called for stronger sentences and community vigilance to protect children.
Police urged parents and guardians to monitor young children and report abuse immediately.
