Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze Remanded in Custody Ahead of Bail Hearing
Johannesburg, South Africa — Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and co-accused Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze will remain in custody until 3 March 2026 ahead of a formal bail application after appearing before the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The 29-year-old son of the late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe and his co-accused appeared in court in connection with a shooting incident at a Hyde Park residence in Johannesburg last Thursday.
Police allege the two men were involved in the shooting of a 23-year-old gardener, who remains in critical condition in hospital.
They face three formal charges before the court:
1. Attempted murder
2. Defeating the ends of justice
3. Possession of a firearm
The additional charges relating to defeating the ends of justice and firearm possession are linked to the fact that the weapon believed to have been used in the incident has not yet been recovered, despite ongoing searches by police.
During the brief court session, the state indicated it would oppose bail, citing ongoing investigations and the need to complete profiling and verification of the accused’s status in South Africa.
The matter has been adjourned to 3 March 2026, when both Mugabe and Matonhodze are expected to formally apply for bail. Police investigations into the shooting and missing firearm remain underway.
