LIVERPOOL APPOINT ANDONI IRAOLA AS HEAD COACH AHEAD OF 2026 to 2027 SEASON
Liverpool Football Club have confirmed the appointment of Andoni Iraola as head coach, with the 43-year-old Spaniard taking charge at Anfield for the 2026 to 2027 campaign.
Iraola replaces Arne Slot, who left the club on Saturday.
The former Bournemouth boss joins after 3 seasons on the south coast where he guided the Cherries to 6th place in the 2024 to 2025 Premier League and secured European qualification for the first time in the club’s history. Bournemouth went on an 18-match unbeaten run in the second half of that campaign.
Speaking to httpLiverpoolfccom, Iraola said “Really excited, really excited.
Because obviously you know about Liverpool, you know that it’s a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world. But feeling inside and understanding a little bit more of this club, I always thought it’s a special club.
You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool.”
Iraola played mainly as a right-back and made more than 500 appearances for Athletic Club over 12 seasons.
He won 7 caps for Spain and retired in 2016 after a spell with New York City FC from 2015 to 2016.
He moved into management in 2018 with AEK Larnaca and won the Cypriot Super Cup.
He then managed Spanish second-tier side Mirandés before joining Rayo Vallecano in 2020, leading them to La Liga promotion in his first season.
Bournemouth appointed him head coach 3 years later. His high-press, attacking style and tactical flexibility stood out, culminating in last season’s European qualification.
