The Nyaope epidemic has taken a dark and disturbing turn with the recent discovery of grave desecration and ancestor exploitation at Atteridgeville cemetery in Pretoria. Three young men from Thembisa were arrested for digging up graves to extract skeletons, which are then crushed into powder, referred to as the "Kush drug," and smoked . This heinous act has claimed the remains of over 56 ancestors, sparking widespread condemnation.

Nyaope, a cocktail drug with heroin as its main ingredient, is widely used by young and poor people in predominantly Black townships in South Africa. Its highly addictive properties have devastating consequences for users and their families, including mental health challenges, physical manifestations and social problems.

Confessions of a Nyaope Addict

One of the arrested individuals revealed the extent of the Nyaope epidemic, admitting to desecrating graves since December last year. This shocking confession has sounded the alarm on the destructive power of substance abuse.
