Gwanda Council Relocates Dumpsite, Targets City Status by 2030

Gwanda Municipality has moved its controversial waste dumpsite to a new location, ending years of complaints from residents about health hazards and environmental damage.

The council confirmed the relocation this week, saying it marks progress in the town’s bid to achieve city status by 2030.

Urban councils in Zimbabwe must meet strict benchmarks on waste management, infrastructure, and service delivery before being upgraded.

The old dumpsite had been condemned for years due to smoke from burning waste, foul odors, and concerns over groundwater pollution. Families living nearby reported respiratory problems and polluted water sources.

Officials did not disclose details of the new site, but said the relocation is part of wider upgrades including road repairs, water supply improvements, and housing projects.

Environmental groups have welcomed the move but say the council must now rehabilitate the old dumpsite to prevent long-term soil and water contamination.
