Nine Killed, 26 Injured After Bus-Train Collision at Chiredzi Crossing
Nine people died and at least 26 others were injured when a passenger bus was struck by a freight train at a railway crossing in Triangle, Chiredzi district, early this morning.
The crash occurred around 8:43 a.m. on Mbizi Road, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police. The bus, operated by Makuku Bus Service, was traveling from Chikombedzi to Masvingo when it was hit by a National Railways of Zimbabwe goods train moving between Triangle and the NRZ Lundi siding.
ZRP confirmed nine fatalities at the scene, including seven adults and two children. Twenty-six survivors were taken to hospital for treatment.
The exact condition of the injured has not yet been released.
NRZ Public Affairs Manager Andrew Kunambura said preliminary findings show the bus driver did not comply with level crossing safety rules.
Zimbabwean road regulations require all drivers to come to a complete stop, look both ways, and listen for approaching trains before crossing railway lines.
“Trains require significant distance to stop once brakes are applied. A collision at a crossing is almost always fatal,” Kunambura said.
He urged motorists and commuter bus operators to treat all unmanned crossings as high-risk zones.
Emergency teams including ZRP, ambulance services, and the local fire brigade responded to the scene to assist with rescue and recovery operations.
NRZ has extended condolences to the bereaved families and reiterated calls for stricter adherence to rail safety protocols.
This incident adds to ongoing concerns about accidents at Zimbabwe’s many unmanned level crossings, where visibility and warning systems are limited.
