Man arrested after pregnant girlfriend dies from assault in Ruwa
A 44-year-old Ruwa man is in custody after his pregnant girlfriend died following an alleged assault at Mutamba Shopping Centre.
Police say Kenneth Chendambuya of Tarisa Park, Ruwa, attacked Shamiso Kandalasi, 34, on Monday. Kandalasi was seven months pregnant at the time. According to reports, Chendambuya assaulted her with his hands and an empty beer bottle.
The attack happened in the presence of Chendambuya’s other girlfriend, Patience Kazingizi, 22.
Kazingizi took Kandalasi to Mabvuku Poly Clinic, where she was pronounced dead. Clinic staff were initially told the woman had pregnancy complications, with no mention of assault. Witnesses later reported the attack to police, leading to Chendambuya’s arrest.
Kandalasi’s body was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
The cause of death is expected to be confirmed after the post-mortem.
There was disruption at the scene when friends of the deceased allegedly moved the body to Mutamba Shopping Centre without family permission, leading to a clash between relatives that delayed burial arrangements in Benson, Goromonzi.
Police investigations are ongoing.
