MAN MISTAKES NEPHEW FOR THIEF, STRIKES HIM WITH AXE IN MT DARWIN
A 49-year-old man from Chimutondo Village has been arrested after he allegedly struck his 35-year-old nephew on the head with an axe, mistaking him for a thief.
Police say Dera Chimutondo spent Sunday evening drinking beer with his nephew, Rinse Harrison, 35, at Chimutondo Business Centre. The pair agreed Harrison would spend the night at Chimutondo’s homestead after the drinking spree.
At around 8am on Monday, Chimutondo woke up searching for his cellphone. In what police described as a drunken state, he saw Harrison sleeping in the house and concluded a thief had broken in.
Armed with an axe, Chimutondo allegedly struck Harrison once on the head before his memory returned.
The injured Harrison managed to crawl outside, where 52-year-old neighbor Help Ndawana found him and rushed him to Mt Darwin Hospital.
Police say Harrison is admitted and now in stable condition with a deep cut to the head.
Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed Chimutondo was subsequently arrested.
He described the incident as “an unfortunate event that could have ended in tragedy” and urged members of the public to drink responsibly and remain conscious of their surroundindings.
