Five feared dead in Harare-Masvingo highway crash

Four people are confirmed dead and five are feared dead after a passenger bus collided head-on with a haulage truck near Chatsworth on the Harare-Masvingo Highway on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m. on May 13, 2026, involving a bus identified by witnesses as an Urban Connect vehicle and a heavy commercial truck. The impact left the front sections of both vehicles severely mangled, requiring emergency responders to extricate victims from the wreckage.

ZBC News Online reported four fatalities, while ZiFM Stereo put the toll at five. Police said several passengers sustained serious injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials warned the death toll could rise as some of the injured remain in critical condition.

The Harare-Masvingo Highway, a 580-kilometre route linking Harare to the Beitbridge border, is one of Zimbabwe’s busiest and most accident-prone roads. Motorists and safety advocates have long referred to the stretch as a “death trap” due to the frequency of fatal crashes.

Police said investigations into the cause of the collision are underway.

The identities of the victims had not been released as of Wednesday afternoon.

Traffic in the Chatsworth area was temporarily disrupted as recovery crews cleared the wreckage .
