Government: Current Form 3 and Lower 6 Cambridge Learners to Sit ZIMSEC Exams in 2027
The government has said that students currently in Form 3 and Lower 6 who are following the Cambridge curriculum will write ZIMSEC examinations in 2027. The move is part of a plan to make ZIMSEC the only national exam body for all schools.
Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said the 2027 date was chosen to avoid disrupting students who are close to their final exams.
“For learners now in Form Three and Lower Six on the Cambridge route, they will sit ZIMSEC O-Level and A-Level exams when they reach their final year,” Ndoro said.
After 2027, all schools will have to register students only with ZIMSEC for national exams. Officials said this is required by the Education Act, which calls for one national curriculum and one national exam board.
Schools that still want to offer Cambridge exams alongside ZIMSEC must apply to the ministry and give a good reason.
They must also show that students can handle both syllabuses without affecting their ZIMSEC results.
The government said the change will end a two-tier system that has created a gap between students based on family income.
Authorities added that ZIMSEC qualifications are already accepted by universities and employers, and the reform fits with the Heritage-Based Curriculum and Vision 2030.
