Woman Gives Birth on Inter Africa Bus During Trip to Gweru

A 33-year-old woman gave birth on an Inter Africa bus on Wednesday while travelling from Chipinge to Gweru.

Kumbirai Magoso delivered a healthy baby boy weighing 2.8kg. The birth happened during a stop at Redan Service Station, Nyika Growth Point, in Bikita.

Fellow passenger Faith Mabika Chinheva, from Mucheke, Masvingo, helped with the delivery.

“I saw the woman moving strangely in her seat,” Chinheva said. “She told me the baby was coming. I told the driver and conductor to stop the bus. We asked passengers for a blanket. I helped her lie in the aisle and deliver safely.”

After the birth, Magoso was taken to Nyika Clinic in a hired car. The bus then continued its journey. Bus conductor Justice Matya confirmed the incident happened on Wednesday afternoon.

Magoso allegedly told _The Midweek Watch_ on Thursday that she and the baby were well.

She was due to leave the clinic later that day.

“I am happy. There were no problems, but it was a big shock. I had no signs that labour would start,” she said.

Nurses at the clinic nicknamed the baby “Inter Africa.” Magoso said she hopes he will one day work for the bus company.

“The driver, conductor and passengers were very kind during the birth,” she added.

Magoso is from Muradzikwa Village in Mt Selinda but lives in Gweru with her husband, Evans Shoko. She had been in Chipinge for a funeral and was returning home. She boarded the bus at Birchenough Bridge.

“I got off the bus at Nyika for a break. When I got back on, labour started very fast,” she said.

Magoso said she did not know her due date and had planned to get a scan in Gweru.

She will stay in Chipinge with her sister until she is fit to travel. Her husband will meet her there.

This is Magoso’s fourth child. Her eldest is 14. She said her third child was also born on the way to hospital in Chipinge.

“We were walking to Chikore Hospital when labour started. I delivered on the road and was taken to hospital by car after,” she said.
