Tragedy on Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road Leaves 12 Dead After Vehicle Explosion


The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed a devastating road traffic incident that claimed the lives of 12 people at the 27-kilometre peg along the Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road near Esigodini.

According to a police press statement dated 17 April 2026, the fatal incident occurred on 16 April at around 1245 hours when a Toyota Quantum carrying 11 passengers reportedly exploded. Authorities say investigations are still underway to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

Police have released the names of nine of the 12 victims who were positively identified by their next of kin:

Thabani Moyo (37), of Old Lobengula, Bulawayo

Nobuhle Mdlongwa (37), of Entumbane, Bulawayo

Oscar Mdlongwa (44)

Sicelesile Mabhen, of Nkulumane 5, Bulawayo

Sibusiso Mabhen (5), of Nkulumane 5, Bulawayo

Mhlupeki Limkani Sibanda (36), of Nkulumane 5, Bulawayo

Tedious Ncube

Precious Moyo (36), of Pumula North, Bulawayo

Promise Brian Gabadela


The bodies of the deceased were taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

The police indicated that more details will be released as investigations progress. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through Bulawayo communities, particularly in Nkulumane, Entumbane, Old Lobengula and Pumula North, where several of the victims resided.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution on highways as investigations continue into this rare and shocking occurrence.
