Mutare Man Reports Alleged Supernatural Attacks, Seeks Help
A 29-year-old man from Chipakanwa village in Marange, Mutare, says he is experiencing ongoing distressing encounters he describes as involving a python, and is appealing for assistance.
Archford Chikwariro claims the ordeal began while he was working in South Africa and has continued since he returned to Mutare. He told reporters the incidents occur while he is awake and are accompanied by seizures. He said attempts to resist have been unsuccessful and that the experiences have severely impacted his health, work, and personal life.
Chikwariro, who is unmarried, left his job in South Africa and returned home to seek help from family. He said both his parents are now unavailable — his mother has since died and his father left the homestead. He lives alone in a dilapidated home, having dropped out of school in Form 4.
He said the constant nature of the episodes has left him physically weak and without peace day or night.
He asserts that the entity is visible only to him. When others are present, he said, they only see his body convulsing.
Chikwariro reported traveling to Harare by bus to share his story with the media, stating that an episode occurred while he waited for a news crew.
Chikwariro has attributed his situation to spiritual causes, saying he has been told by different people that it may involve evil spirits, a vengeful spirit, or witchcraft.
Traditional healer Sekuru Kanengo was quoted in local reports suggesting Chikwariro needs urgent help, linking such cases to harmful ritual beliefs.
The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, ZimParks, has previously noted that heatwaves can drive snakes from burrows into homes, increasing sightings.
However, spokesperson Tinashe Farawo has not commented on this specific case.
Scientific and traditional explanations often differ on incidents of this nature.
Similar reports have emerged elsewhere in Zimbabwe ,In Glen View 3, Harare, the Goredema family recently vacated their home after repeatedly finding large brown snakes under beds. The family said the snakes appeared resilient to attempts to kill them.
Traditional healer Mbuya Shumba suggested such cases may involve unresolved family issues or beliefs in charms, while authorities pointed to environmental factors.
Chikwariro said he continues to seek help from medical professionals, religious leaders, and traditional healers.
Mental health practitioners in Zimbabwe have previously urged communities to support individuals reporting unexplained distress and to seek clinical assessment alongside spiritual counseling.
