Gweru City Council Introduces US$30 Fine for Littering
Gweru City Council has introduced a US$30 spot fine for littering as part of efforts to improve cleanliness and public health.
The move follows a waste management meeting involving government departments, environmental agencies, and civic groups, amid concerns over illegal dumping.
Mayor Martin Chivhoko said the fine is a step towards stricter enforcement, highlighting the health risks of littering, including the spread of diseases like cholera and typhoid.
The council plans to prosecute offenders and upgrade waste management infrastructure, including adding compactors and skip bins.
The city is also rolling out an Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan (2026-2030) to promote recycling and reduce waste.
Residents and businesses are urged to cooperate, and enforcement agencies like EMA and ZRP are backing the campaign.
The fine is part of a broader strategy to restore order and cleanliness in Gweru, with plans to increase refuse collection efficiency and discourage illegal dumping.
