Zimbabwe Launches New ZiG Banknotes Tomorrow

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has confirmed that all is set for the rollout of new ZiG banknotes tomorrow, with sufficient quantities distributed countrywide to meet cash demand.

The new banknotes will be introduced in a phased manner, starting with ZiG10, ZiG20, and ZiG50 denominations.

RBZ Governor Dr John Mushayavanhu said the central bank has put in place necessary logistics and operational modalities for a seamless rollout.

The old ZiG banknote series will continue to co-circulate with the new "BiG5 ZiG" banknotes indefinitely and will be phased out as they are deposited into the banking system.

The introduction of new banknotes is expected to strengthen the ZiG's position against the US dollar, amid current macroeconomic stability, including single-digit inflation and converging parallel and official exchange rates.

The new banknotes will be available through banking halls, ATMs, and HomeLink Kiosks, with merchants and retailers encouraged to offer ZiG cashback facilities.

Mobile Money Operators are also expected to resume cash-in and cash-out provisions in ZiG.
