From the Pit to the Podium: Mining Veteran Polite Kambamura Takes Helm of Zimbabwe's Key Ministry

In a strategic appointment aimed at bolstering Zimbabwe’s critical mining sector, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has named a seasoned mining engineer and industry insider, Engineer (Dr) Polite Kambamura, as the new Minister of Mines and Mining Development.

The 48-year-old technocrat, who was sworn into office on Monday, December 8, brings over two decades of hands-on experience from the trenches of both local and regional mines to the highest policy-making office in the land.

A proud product of the University of Zimbabwe, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Mining Engineering in 2002, Kambamura’s career trajectory is a classic tale of climbing the ladder from the ground up. His professional journey began on the home front, with formative years at notable Zimbabwean operations including the Trojan Nickel Mine and Shamva Mine, then under LONRHO, and Ashanti Goldfields.

Seeking to broaden his expertise, Kambamura later took his skills south to the mining hubs of South Africa. There, he reportedly started in junior positions and, through a demonstrated grasp of the complex industry, steadily rose through the ranks to management level. This blend of deep domestic knowledge and regional exposure is seen by industry analysts as a significant asset for his new role.

“The appointment of a qualified mining engineer to lead this ministry signals a clear intent to prioritize technical expertise and operational pragmatism,” noted a Harare-based economic commentator. “Minister Kambamura isn’t just an administrator; he has worn a hard hat, understood the geology, managed the crews, and navigated the challenges our mines face daily.”

The Ministry of Mines and Mining Development is a pivotal portfolio for Zimbabwe, a nation whose economy is heavily reliant on mineral exports such as gold, platinum, and lithium. The sector is central to the government’s ambition of achieving an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

As he assumes office, Eng (Dr) Kambamura is expected to immediately grapple with key issues including foreign currency retention policies for miners, revitalizing underperforming state-owned assets, attracting fresh investment, and ensuring the sector’s contribution to national development is maximized.

While the new minister has yet to outline his formal policy agenda, his background suggests a leadership style rooted in the practical realities of mining. The industry will be watching closely to see how this engineer, shaped by the very mines he now oversees, will engineer the sector’s next chapter.
