Cattle Disease Devastates Rural Livelihoods in Insiza
A mysterious cattle disease has killed dozens of cattle in Insiza South's Gankabezi area, leaving families struggling to survive.
The disease causes internal rotting and primarily attacks the lungs, with traditional remedies proving ineffective.
Cattle are a vital source of wealth, food, and income for rural families.
The loss of cattle has pushed households to the brink of financial ruin, with many struggling to pay school fees and maintain their homes.
Bekithemba Thebe lost 21 cattle, impacting his ability to support his family.
Gift Ndlovu lost his entire herd, except for a few calves, and is emotionally traumatized.
Roger Ncube buried 15 animals in quick succession, with some carcasses left to rot due to the rapid rate of death.
The lack of veterinary support and dipping facilities has worsened the crisis.
Farmers are appealing for urgent government and donor support, including veterinary services, vaccines, and restocking programs. Clarkson Matshaya from the Umzingwane District Farmers Association recommends producing fodder and rehabilitating dip tanks to help farmers.
The Matabeleland South Veterinary Services Department has been approached for comment, but no response has been provided.
The situation remains dire, with villagers seeking sustainable solutions to restore their livelihoods.
