Government Bans Tinted Car Windows to Curb Crime and Drug Abuse

Harare – The government has announced a nationwide ban on tinted vehicle windows as part of a broader effort to combat rising crime and drug abuse. The directive, issued by Tafadzwa Muguti, Permanent Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, takes immediate effect and applies to both private and public vehicles.

Under the new policy, police will either forcibly remove the tint from non-compliant vehicles or impound them altogether. Informal public transport operators, commonly known as *mushikashika*, are expected to be among the most affected.

“The use of tinted windows provides cover for criminal activity, and this move is essential for public safety,” said Muguti. Authorities have linked tinted vehicles to a spike in serious crimes, including armed robberies and sexual assaults.

However, exemptions will apply to government VIPs, security services, and vehicles with factory-installed standard tinting.

The crackdown on tinted windows comes alongside other anti-drug and crime initiatives. One such measure will require parents or guardians to commit to a mandatory seven-month separation period when their children enter
rehabilitation centers.
In a move to centralize and streamline government communication, Muguti also announced that only Ministers of State for Provincial Affairs will now be authorized to speak to the media on government policy matters, a response to concerns over officials seeking personal popularity through premature statements.

Additionally, toll-free numbers will soon be launched in all provinces to allow the public to anonymously report drug-related crimes.

Authorities are urging all motorists to comply with the new regulations to avoid penalties, as the government intensifies efforts to improve safety and restore order across the country.
