Zimbabwe Commemorates 45th Heroes’ Day, Honouring Liberation Icons and National Service
Harare – Zimbabwe marked the 45th anniversary of Heroes’ Day on Monday, a national holiday dedicated to remembering the country’s liberation war heroes and heroines. The main commemorations were held at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who praised the sacrifices of the fallen and emphasized the nation’s ongoing commitment to unity, development, and patriotism.
The President presented national flags to the families of four individuals posthumously declared national heroes. These included renowned nationalist and labour rights activist Cde Benjamin Burombo, decorated military officer Brigadier-General (Rtd) Lameck Francisco Mutanda, veteran of the liberation struggle Cde John Mbedzi, and Cde Jairos Jiri, a trailblazer in disability rights and welfare.
“The sacrifices of our heroes and heroines must never be forgotten,” said President Mnangagwa in his address. “Their legacy inspires us to build a prosperous, united, and sovereign Zimbabwe.”
Heroes' Day ceremonies were held in all provinces, with government officials presiding over the commemorations. In Mashonaland East, the event was hosted at the Provincial Heroes Acre in Marondera, with a music gala scheduled in Hwedza following the Defence Forces Day commemorations. Masvingo Province held its event under the leadership of Minister of State Ezra Chadzamira, while Matabeleland North marked the day in Lupane, with Somhlolo Stadium set to host Defence Forces Day celebrations.
This year’s commemorations also recognized individuals who have made significant contributions to national service and humanity. Teenager Inasem-L Chitutu was awarded the Silver Cross of Zimbabwe for rescuing two children from a burning house. Dr. Madeline Nyamwanza, Zimbabwe’s first female African medical doctor, received the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Commendation Award for her role in developing human capital. Additionally, Professor Vladimir Gennadyevich Shubin, a key Soviet ally during the liberation struggle, was honoured with the Zimbabwe International Friendship Award.
As the country reflects on its past and the heroes who shaped its independence, Heroes’ Day continues to serve as a unifying moment for Zimbabweans, reinforcing national pride and the enduring spirit of sacrifice for the nation’s future.
