Harare Introduces AI-Powered Traffic Enforcement to Boost Road Safety

Harare City Council has launched an automated traffic enforcement system aimed at modernizing traffic management and improving road safety across the city. The new system uses artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor, detect, and respond to traffic violations in real time, marking a major shift in how traffic laws are enforced in the capital.

At the heart of the initiative are AI-powered cameras that capture various traffic offenses, including line-crossing violations and failure to wear seatbelts. These smart devices are connected to a centralized platform that allows real-time data sharing between the city’s Public Safety Division, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), and other regulatory authorities. This integration ensures swift enforcement, reduces congestion, and supports safer roads.

The project was first piloted at the busy intersection of Jaison Moyo Avenue and Simon Muzenda Street. In just one week, over 3,600 vehicles were recorded crossing designated stop lines at this location. Based on the success of the trial, the city now plans to roll out the system across more intersections, supported by a public awareness campaign to educate motorists on the new enforcement measures.

City officials say the main goals of the project are to reduce traffic accidents, encourage responsible driving, and promote fairness in law enforcement. The use of AI technology is expected to enhance efficiency and transparency while ensuring data privacy and fair fine structures for offenders.

As the city moves forward with the expansion of this system, residents can expect a noticeable improvement in traffic flow and compliance. Authorities believe this innovation marks a key step toward smarter, safer urban living in Harare.
