$60,000 Lost in Birchenough Fire

A devastating fire razed a furniture store in Birchenough, Zimbabwe, on June 12, causing approximately $60,000 in losses.

The store, owned by 38-year-old Josaphat Mahembe from Gadzai Village, was destroyed in the blaze that broke out around 2 pm.

According to eyewitness Nyaradzo Mtetwa, a loud bursting sound emanated from the shop, prompting her to alert Mahembe.

Despite efforts by nearby residents to extinguish the fire, it rapidly intensified, consuming the entire store constructed with wooden poles and iron sheet roofing.

The Chipinge Fire Brigade was called to the scene, but their arrival was too late to salvage Mahembe's property.

Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed that the cause of the fire remains unknown, with investigations ongoing.

"We urge the public to report any suspicious activities or potential fire hazards to the authorities immediately.

Your prompt action can help prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of our communities," Assistant Inspector Chinyoka appealed.
