A tragic accident occurred on Sunday when a Mushika Shika vehicle plunged into a disused 30-meter chrome pit filled with water along the Zvishavane-Shurugwi road.

Five people lost their lives, including a heavily pregnant woman, three of her relatives, while one person escaped by swimming to safety.

The incident happened in Gakaka, Shurugwi South, Midlands Province.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police and the police sub-aqua unit worked tirelessly to recover the bodies.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but authorities suspect that poor visibility and the proximity of the pit to the road contributed to the tragedy.

Mining areas are prone to accidents due to exposed and uncovered pits."
