President Mnangagwa Presides Over Zimbabwe Open University's 22nd Graduation Ceremony


On Friday, December 6, 2024, President Mnangagwa, the Chancellor of all State Universities, presided over the 22nd graduation ceremony at the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU). The ceremony was a significant event, marking the university's 25th anniversary, also known as the Silver Jubilee.

A total of 3,320 graduands from various disciplines received their degrees, with 2,154 female graduands and 1,166 male graduands. The graduates received degrees in fields such as Agriculture, Science, Technology,Commerce and more.

Some notable graduates included the late Senator Lilian Timveous, who was posthumously awarded a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Development Studies, and 78-year-old Andreas Zvaiwa, who received a Doctor of Philosophy in Counselling.

The ceremony was attended by Cabinet Ministers, including Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Fredereck Shava, and Information Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere. The police band performed the national anthem, and President Mnangagwa declared the congregation a duly constituted graduation ceremony.

In his speech, Vice Chancellor Prof Gundani highlighted the university's achievements and its commitment to developing women leaders. Notably, female graduates made up about 65% of the total.

The graduation ceremony was a celebration of the university's quarter-century milestone, during which it has produced 53,170 graduates and delivered free training courses to 59,443 members across Zimbabwe's 10 provinces. The event's theme encouraged the class of 2024 to leverage their potential to achieve the vision of an upper-middle-income country by 2030
