Chipinge man smuggled alcohol worth over US$38k.

A 31-year-old Chipinge man,  Chigerwe, has been fined US$300 by the Chipinge Magistrates' Court for smuggling alcohol worth over US$38,000 into Zimbabwe from Mozambique.

Chigerwe was caught on March 4, 2025, during an anti-smuggling operation conducted by the Chipinge CID, support unit, and ZIMRA officials.

Chigerwe attempted to smuggle the alcohol through an undesignated entry point at Southdown, Chipinge.

When spotted, he made a U-turn and fled to Mozambique, where he was eventually arrested due to his high-speed driving.

Upon searching his vehicle, a Honda Fit (ADQ 5126), authorities discovered a large quantity of alcoholic beverages for which Chigerwe failed to produce duty payments.

The seized car and goods were taken to the ZIMRA Mount Selinda border post, and the smuggled alcohol was valued at US$38,060.23.
