Mutare Man Jailed for Attempted Murder

"A Mutare man has been jailed for attempted murder and malicious damage to property after setting his ex-wife's house on fire. 

The Mutare Regional Magistrates' Court convicted Zvenyika Gomo (50) and sentenced him to 14 years in prison for attempted murder.

He was also convicted of malicious damage to property after setting his former wife's house on fire in Chimaniman.

 On June 2024, Gomo broke into his ex-wife's house, where his two stepdaughters, aged 11 and 12, were sleeping. 

He set the house ablaze using petrol, and the two girls managed to escape.

Neighbors helped extinguish the fire, and the damaged property was valued at US$4,500. Additionally, US$1,500 in cash was destroyed in the fire.

The court found Gomo guilty and sentenced him to 10 years for attempted murder, with two years suspended. 

For malicious damage to property, he was sentenced to six years, with two years suspended."
